MOJO RISING BLUES CRUISE: GUNSHOT BLUE

Updated: Oct 8, 2018

Gunshot Blue is one of the bands gearing up for the maiden voyage of the Mojo Rising Blues Cruise. We caught up with them to see how they will be keeping busy until then and who they will share their life raft with!

Q: It is no secret that Blues is a greatly under-appreciated genre in South Africa. So what is your secret to standing out in a saturated undervalued market?

A:In our performance, we don't sing and deliver the blues in a way that is expected. we give it a psychedelic interpretation.

in the way we present ourselves, we always dress up. Sometimes even with hat, tie and full three piece suits. In the destinations we play, we gig at fresh venues like a barbershop, a horse farm or an old jail. giving the listener an authentic experience

Q: You guys take a lot of inspiration from delta blues sounds. It is a subgenre of blues associated with hardships and struggles faced in a certain time. How can you authentically translate that sound and feeling having come from a background vastly different from the OG’s of the genre like Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters?

A: In the first place, don't let the slide guitar take you on a dirt road into the swamps. our music has many landscapes, especially if you start listening to the words. we write our own songs. we don't do covers. We don't try and imitate or translate any artist or genre. secondly, to say none of us have had any hardships or struggles is a grave assumption. have you seen, felt, tasted the dark night of the soul?

"Can't talk about the blues if you don't walk in its shoes. Can't sing about the blues if you don't dance in its ruins. Can't live without the blues if you don't die in its wounds" - Frans Borman

Q: The Blues Cruise is an exciting new venture, a first of it’s kind on our shores. What would you say to convince people who are a bit hesitant to jump on board on the maiden voyage?

A:The Blues Cruise is like a boutique festival with a bespoke line-up inside a hotel that happens to be on top of a cruise liner inside the indian ocean

Q: If the ship had to pull a Titanic, which other band on board would you want to share a life raft with? And what would be the one thing you need on that raft?

A:Wolfgang Marrow. Lots of champagne.

Q: What can fans expect from Gunshot Blue from until cruise time?

A: A full length album, another single, a music video for that single. Lots Grappa. Many cigars.
