BornFree are young vocal duo John Tsenoli and Philip Hanly who met in early 2016 at StageWorx Performing Arts School. ‘Know You Better’ was written and recorded in 2017 already and the duo have been patiently waiting to release it.
John explains the process behind the recording of the single, commenting “The creative process of ‘Know You Better’ has been a long but exciting journey. We wanted to do something that not only represented us, but also represents the youth and how we want them to get to ‘Know Us Better’ type thing. I believe because the energy of the work place during this magical time was so positive, that was exactly why we have this song and I’m just really excited to see how people receive it. It feels like a first-born child that you have to send off to the world knowing how dangerous that can be.”
Finally released, Philip is also anxious to hear what people have to say about their debut. “It’s been a long road getting to this point. Probably the hardest part has come in the last few months with so many unforeseen events happening... It’s been a major learning curve. We have really had our heads down the last few years though - performing all over, practising new songs, and writing and recording - it’s all been in preparation for the release of this song. Why call themselves BornFree? The group’s name is an iconic phrase locally and represents the youth born following the struggle that many South Africans faced in the years leading up to 1994. Those born from 1994 onwards are considered “born free” – as they are born after the country’s liberation. The pair manage to use their differing backgrounds to their advantage, creating music that gives a soundtrack to a happy, fun, loving environment where all are considered equal.
